Carthage was a great city of antiquity found on the north coast of Africa and on the eastern side of the Lake of Tunis. The city was, according to legend, founded by colonists from the city-state of Tyre lead by the exiled princess Dido.
Due to its position, which allowed it to influence and control ships between Sicily and the northafrican coast, it became a thriving port and trading centre and one of the richest cities of the classical world. Carthage was also famous for its involvement in a series of wars against Rome, also known as the Punic Wars, which resulted in the destruction of the city in 146 BC.
